All establishments that perform food preparation including but not limited to fast food, restaurants, cafes, schools, churches, and businesses that contribute oil and/or grease (directly or indirectly) to wastewater must have properly sized grease/oil interceptors or traps.

The plans and specifications must be approved by the City for new construction.

Homeowners are responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of sidewalks. Unless otherwise specified, all new sidewalks shall be at least four (4) feet wide when replaced. Sidewalks adjacent to new building construction along streets shall be at least five (5) feet in width; provided, however, that on Sheridan Boulevard, Harlan Street, Pierce Street, and on all Avenues within the City, sidewalks shall be at least six (6) feet in width. Sidewalks shall be constructed in accordance with engineering details provided by the City, note that the City follows CDOT’s curb ramp details.

New construction or renovations that touch the water line must put in an outside water meter pit and the meter must be moved outside. A right-of-way (ROW) permit is required and can be applied for using Community Core. In the case of a duplex being built each separate unit will need to have its own water line with a meter and sewer line. Existing 5/8” taps must be changed to ¾” by applying for a permit.

Drainage from the site shall flow to either the alley or street.  No runoff from the lot shall negatively impact any neighboring properties.  Contractor to provide positive drainage away from the proposed structure.

Edgewater is served by Edgewater Sewer and the East Jefferson Sanitation District. The City of Edgewater issues permits for sewer work and taps, except in the East Jefferson Sanitation district (see map). The East Jefferson Sanitation District should be contacted directly for work in their district, however a ROW permit from the City of Edgewater is required for work in the ROW.

Sewer’s under garages – Per Municipal Code 13-3-220, proposed permanent structures over the top of sanitary sewer service lines shall be inspected by the city. If the line is clay or found to be in disrepair the owner shall replace it with Schedule 40 PVC pipe.

City Code requires that a Right-of-Way (ROW) permit be obtained to place an object or structure in the City ROW. A ROW is the strip of land occupied by a road, sidewalk, utility lines or other uses that typically extends several feet from the paved roadway.

Best practice is to ensure the discharge location is no closer than 10 feet to a property line so that water can be slowed and absorbed by the ground. Sump pumps must not create ponding, cause erosion or adversely affect adjacent properties.

Permissible ways to discharge a sump pump.

1. Discharge on private property. No permit is needed to discharge a sump pump on private property, ensure that the discharge does not adversely affect adjacent properties or cause icing on sidewalks.
2. Discharge to an existing public underground storm drainpipe, inlet or utility hole. This option requires that the private discharge pipes have back-flow-prevention valves to prevent flow from the public storm drain entering private sump pump discharge pipes.
3. Discharge to the curb. This type of installation involves installing the sump pump discharge pipe through the curb to allow the sump pump drainage to flow into the gutter. This type of connection is approved on a case-by-case basis by the City Engineer because it could create icy hazards on the street.
4. New construction.  Design work should be done upfront to ensure the sump pump can use swales and landscaping to be able to discharge on private property.

Edgewater is serviced by the Edgewater Water Utility. Denver Water is the wholesaler and provides all water treatment and delivery to the Edgewater system. You can apply for a permit to use the hydrant and rent a meter on Community Core. You must have a current contractor’s license to access Community Core. Hydrant Meters require a deposit, which covers costs due to damage, loss or theft of the meter. The deposit is refundable at the time of return, after water usage and fee deductions.

Fee and Rates:

• Hydrant Meter deposit: $1,200.00
• Minimum water charge: $160 (first 5,000 gallons or less)
• Water rate: $4.00 per 1,000 gallons over the minimum
