Snow Plow & Street Sweeper

Please remember not to shovel snow, ice or mud from your sidewalk or driveway on to the street or alley, this makes it harder for vehicles to pass and increases the time it takes for the roads to clear. The renter, homeowner, or business owner is required to remove snow and ice on ALL SIDEWALKS surrounding the property, including avenue corner lots, within 24 hours of the last snowfall.

Snow Plow Routes

The City does not recommend parking on the following streets if a snowstorm is expected:
- Snow will be pushed and built up to the north and south. -
20th Ave. between Sheridan Blvd. and Pierce St.
22nd Ave. between Sheridan Blvd. and Pierce St.
24th Ave. between Sheridan Blvd. and Pierce St.
25th Ave. between Sheridan Blvd. and Marshall St.
26th Ave. between Sheridan Blvd. and Pierce St.
- Snow will be pushed and built up in center of street. -
Harlan St. between 20th Ave. and 26th Ave.

Edgewater crews work to keep the roads as clear as possible during a snowstorm. This includes plowing roads several times over the course of the storm. The priority of plows is to keep traffic flowing by diverting the snow out of the traffic lanes. This can result in piles of snow at the end of driveways called windrows. This is unavoidable as it is related to the amount of snow and it is not done intentionally. The city does not clear windrows, but thanks all residents for clearing snow and helping neighbors.

What is the Snow Angels Program?

Snow-covered sidewalks can be hazardous for everyone. The City of Edgewater's Snow Angels Program pairs older residents and residents with disabilities with nearby neighbors who volunteer to assist them with snow removal on their sidewalks and walkways.

Along with fostering stronger community relationships and relieving some of the stress that comes from a snowfall or freeze, Snow Angels make our sidewalks safer for those who are outside during the winter weather, like postal carriers, firefighters, police officers, and other neighbors.

Volunteer to become a Snow Angel

What to Know Before Signing Up to Volunteer as a Snow Angel:

  • You will be assigned to a neighbor in need who lives no more than a 10-minute walk from your address - we try to place neighbors and close to home as possible.
  • We will contact you via email with confirmation details when you have been assigned a neighbor.
  • You may not be assigned to help a neighbor immediately. Neighbors request help throughout the winter season. You may be assigned immediately, a few weeks after you sign up, or later during the winter.
  • Your assignment depends on if a neighbor near you needs help. If none of your neighbors sign up, we may not be able to assign you. Either way, we will keep in touch!
  • We require that you help out your neighbor as soon as you are able and within 24-hours of the end of a snow event.
  • Sometimes more than one neighbor who requests help live in the same block. If you’re willing to help shovel for more than one neighbor, please let us know on your sign-up form (below).

Street Sweeping

Street Sweeping is scheduled April - October.

Streets will still be swept in the months outside of this season, but scheduled based on weather rather than a set schedule. Street sweeping removes debris from streets and prevents it from entering our storm drains. Street sweeping not only assists in keeping the City clean but also helps the City comply with state and federal stormwater quality requirements.

The street sweeper is not designed to pick up large pieces, piles or wet debris.

Here is how you can help improve the cleanliness of your street

  1. Avoid piling leaves or other debris in the street or gutter.
  2. Don’t rake, sweep, blow leaves or other debris in the street or gutter.
  3. Keep branches and long twigs out of street or gutters.
  4. Remove any portable items (i.e. basketball hoops) from gutter.

In 2024 the City is making changes to enhance our street sweeping program. Streets will be swept the third full week of the month to avoid as many Holidays as possible (see dates below).

  • Avenues will generally be swept on the Friday of the third full week of the month.
  • Alleys will be swept twice a year when time permits. The City is adding an additional month in November. All sweeping dates are subject to change depending on weather.

There will be at least one deep clean where the road is swept curb to curb completed during the year. Signs will be put out and vehicles not moved may receive a ticket.

  • In 2024 the deep clean will be done the week of May 20. Additional deep cleanings may be scheduled as needed to maintain the streets.

On other months the road will be swept however, signs will not be put out. Moving your vehicle is appreciated as it helps to keep streets and neighborhoods clean, prevent debris from entering storm drains and reduces air pollution. Residents should check the website and social media for the sweeping schedule.

What is the third full week of the month?

To be consistent with the time of the month street sweeping will start on the third full week of the month. A full week is when M-F falls completely in the month and is not split between two different months.

For 2024 the sweeping week for each month will be:

April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18
