Edgewater has a backflow and cross-connection control program to protect our water from contamination and the program is an integral part of ensuring safe drinking water. The city looks for potential risks in commercial, industrial, and non-single-family residences.

Water distribution systems are designed to allow water to travel in one direction from the treatment plant to the customer. Under certain conditions water can flow in the opposite direction and this is known as backflow. A cross-connection occurs when water supply lines are connected to a potential contaminant. When these conditions occur, potentially harmful contaminants can mix with drinking water. You can learn more at the Backflow Academy.

Edgewater’s backflow and cross-connection program is managed by Backflow Solutions, Inc. Approved backflow devices must be installed and tested annually as required by city ordinance.

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Water Quality Control Division sets the requirements that an individual must be certified to test backflow devices through Regulation 11; however the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control has additional requirements regarding who is allowed to work on fire suppression systems which would include work on backflow devices for fire suppression systems.
